Building a Legacy of Learning Through a Tennessee Classical Academies Education
If you are interested in starting a Tennessee Classical school in your community, email inquires to TNClassical@gmail.com with the subject line “Interested in a School for Our Community.” Requests for assistance in the application and creation of a charter school need to be communicated before June 30 annually. Tennessee Classical Academies will work with one or two communities per charter application cycle and support them through the application process until the charter is approved. This support includes collaboration in writing the charter application, facilities analysis, consultation about community investment, back office support, food and bus vendors, connection to state charter school advocates, ongoing consultation, and other charter business topics. We are a local Tennessee corporation. Although we support the prerogative of communities to engage with national CMO’s, we are not that.
Starting a Tennessee Classical Academies school is a meaningful and ambitious endeavor—one that requires vision, planning, and the belief that every child deserves access to a content-rich, character-forming education, not just those in private schools. This model can reach the most urban student to transform their lives. It can also reach and teach with validity in the most remote counties on our Cumberland Plateau, upper west Tennessee or the southern Appalachians utilizing the unparalleled natural beauty of our state as a master teacher.
This process is not for the faint of heart. It is best to not rely solely upon any available startup grants the state may have, and instead garner significant community support in the form of financial and experiential investment prior to the application process. In Tennessee, the process is rigorous, but with the right team, resources, and guidance, it is entirely achievable. Planning ahead to gather the support needed is crucial.

A charter school must be governed by a nonprofit board of directors. Your founding board should include individuals with experience in education, law, finance, and community leadership. Most importantly, they must share a commitment to classical education and student success.tion text goes here
-
Working with a proven classical charter support organization, network, or charter management organization (CMO) is a game-changer. These partners provide curriculum guidance, operational frameworks, training, and long-term strategic support to ensure your school stays mission-aligned and successful from day one.
-
The charter application is detailed and reviewed by a local school district or the Tennessee Public Charter School Commission. A strong application outlines your mission, academic model, governance, operations, financial plan, and clear academic goals. Approval can take several months—and may require revisions—so early preparation is key.

Finding the right facility is one of the most challenging parts of launching a charter school. Start exploring options early—whether renovating an existing space, leasing a property, or building from the ground up. You’ll also need to fundraise to cover startup costs, including curriculum, furniture, staffing, and technology before state funding begins.
How long does it take?
From initial vision to opening day, launching a classical charter school typically takes 3–4 years. While that may sound long, each step is essential to ensure your school is built on a strong foundation—academically, financially, and legally.
